I believe strongly in what Martin Luther King Jr said in his famous speech — that people should be judged not by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. I’ve had friends of different races — black, Armenian, Vietnamese, Korean. When I was in college, I decided to take a few semesters of summer school so I could get ahead on some credits I needed to graduate. My roommate was a Japanese girl who had come here from Japan, had to learn English first and then took her college classes. Those two semesters were probably some of my most interesting semesters at college, not only because of what I learned in the classes I took, but because of what I learned from my roommate.

It sounds like your daughter was just being honest. Being around other kids at school, she may hear their comments. I’m sure she’s strong enough not to let them influence her opinion though.

I started writing in elementary school and never stopped. I enjoy sharing stories about my hard-learned life lessons and writing advice.
