Setting Goals and Getting Back to Writing on Medium
This week has been a great week for me. Work has (finally!) slowed down a bit, and I’ve been able to get a lot accomplished in other areas of my life, including my writing, and starting to figure out what resolutions I’m going to make for 2018.
Started writing on Medium again.
I’ve been writing on Medium sporadically for the past few months because life has been very busy since Kevin and I moved into our house. Because of that, the number of views my stories have been getting has dropped. I decided to start writing on Medium on a regular basis again this week — I’ve published something every day since December 16, whether it was something I wrote or something I imported from one of my websites or blogs.
Finally joined the Medium Partner Program
I had heard about the Medium Partner program a while back and had tried to join, but I’d been having problems joining because I couldn’t receive the text message I needed to confirm my Stripe account. I’d been on the phone and exchanged several emails with Stripe support, but have been unable to solve the issue until now. I finally figured out what to do to solve it though — I added the phone number that Stripe sends their text message from, 787473 (it spells STRIPE on your phone keypad) to my contacts list. After that, I was able to receive the text message and get my account verified. I’ve submitted some of my previously published stories to the Medium Partner program.
Started thinking about the resolutions I want to make for 2018.
2018 has been kind of a big year for me. I had made three resolutions at the beginning of this year: reduce my hours at Apptical, buy a house and get back to playing piano. I’ve only fulfilled one of those resolutions — buying a house. That’s a pretty big resolution though, so I’m not going to worry about not accomplishing the other two. I’m still not quite sure what resolutions I want to make for 2018, but I’ve got a few ideas:
Lose weight — yeah, I know it’s general, but I’m waiting until closer to the end of the year to figure out how much weight I need to lose. Since I moved into this house, I’ve gained quite a bit — I probably weigh about as much now as I did when I started P90x 6 years ago. I’m planning to start Beachbody’s Core de Force program after the holidays, so I’ll check my weight and measurements then, and use that as my starting point. — until then I’m going to do a few of their week-long programs.
Make more money from freelance writing — Yes, I know this is another general one, but I plan to hold onto my day job for now, so I need to figure out how much I can realistically make while still working my day job. I’m hoping I’ll be able to start making some money from the stories I submit to the Medium Partner program, as well as from some of the contests and other writing income opportunities I’m going to look into in 2018.
Continue building up my savings — I’ll figure out how much I can save realistically in 2018 later. Right now I’m saving about $50 a month — $25 is going into a savings account I have, and another $25 is going into an IRA I have set up aside from the 401(k) I have with work. I also have another $50 that’s going into a savings account I have set up with my main bank, but that’s short-term savings that we use as we need to. *Continue working on our house — Kevin and I got quite a bit accomplished on our house in 2017. We had a fence put up, had a shed put in the backyard, and bought new furniture. Next year I think we’re going to work on improving the landscaping once spring arrives. I’ll have to be careful how much work I do outside though because I’m highly allergic to bees. I also want to work more on getting my office set up the way I want it — I have some ideas, but I’m not sure what I want to do yet.
Read more books in 2018 than I did in 2017 — I think I’ll end up reading about 12 books this year — next year I’d like to increase that to about 15. Some of the books I have on my to-read list include:
- The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand — I read part of it years ago, but would love to read it again.
- The Message of a Master by John McDonald
- Unstoppable Women by Cynthia Kersey
- There is Gold Inside You by Edgar Barroso
- Gone Tomorrow (Jack Reacher #13) by Lee Child
- Epileptic by Davd B.
- Happy Accidents: Serendipity in Modern Medical Breathroughs by Morton A. Meyers
I also want to continue reading Rhonda Byrne’s books — I’ve read “The Secret,” “The Power” and I’m working on “The Magic.”
Continued working hard at my day job — Open enrollment is finally over. However, the early part of this week was very busy. Thursday and Friday we started to slow down a bit as people started getting ready for the holidays. I’m expecting next week to be slow, so I’ll probably use some of the time to work on coming up with more concrete New Years’ resolutions.
That’s about it for what I accomplished this week, I’ll be back next week with another update. I hope everyone has a very happy holiday!
