Wow. Good for you for sharing this story, and what a great reason to become a teacher. I hope your students love you and appreciate the hard work you put in. Though I didn’t go through anything as dramatic as you did, I went through some stuff in high school too — my dad was a drinker until the summer before my senior year of high school, when he had to do some jail time for some trouble he’d gotten into. I took that really hard because I’ve always looked up to my dad (well to both my parents really). But he joined AA and has been sober for over 20 years now. Then right around the time my dad was supposed to get out of jail, I found out my mother might have breast cancer — later it was confirmed she had breast cancer, so that made for a difficult senior year of high school as I watched her go through chemotherapy, as well as a difficult freshman year of college, because I decided to go away to college, and she was still dying of cancer. Luckily though, I was there when she died — that’s probably the thing I’m most thankful for.

If you’re interested in reading my story about my mom’s death I wrote about it here: https://medium.com/lessons-from-my-life/one-day-ill-never-forget-1be9e7b28f62?source=friends_link&sk=3733415ad79fdf486347f0c261b6cf90. I have yet to share my story about the stuff I went through when I found out my dad was going to jail…

I started writing in elementary school and never stopped. I enjoy sharing stories about my hard-learned life lessons and writing advice.
